Retaining Wall Drainage Guide
Water is one of the most important forces acting on a retaining wall. A wall may be strong enough to hold dry soil but still move, lean, or fail when trapped water creates hydrostatic pressure behind it.
Typical drainage components
- Clean, angular drain rock directly behind the wall
- Perforated drainpipe placed near the base where appropriate
- A dependable gravity outlet, daylight point, or designed collection system
- Filter fabric separating drainage aggregate from fine soil
- Surface grading that keeps runoff from flowing behind the wall
- Caps, swales, drains, or curbing where concentrated water must be controlled
Why ordinary soil should not fill the drainage zone
Clay and fine soil hold water and can clog drainage aggregate and pipe. A free-draining zone gives water a low-resistance path toward the outlet instead of allowing pressure to build against the wall.
Common drainage mistakes
- Installing perforated pipe without a usable outlet
- Allowing downspouts to discharge behind the wall
- Using fine or dirty gravel that holds sediment
- Skipping filter fabric where soil migration is likely
- Overwatering plants immediately above the wall
- Blocking outlets with soil, mulch, ice, or landscaping
- Assuming visible weep holes alone solve every drainage problem
Warning signs of a drainage problem
- Water flowing through joints or staining the wall face
- Bulging, leaning, or separated wall units
- Soggy soil or sinkholes behind the wall
- Erosion near the ends or outlets
- Efflorescence that repeatedly returns
- Movement that becomes worse after storms or snowmelt
Special conditions that may need engineering
- Walls supporting driveways, buildings, pools, or steep slopes
- Tiered walls or walls near property lines
- Clay, expansive, weak, or groundwater-affected soils
- Walls with limited options for a gravity outlet
- Large concentrated flows from roofs, streets, or neighboring land
Drainage must be designed as part of the wall—not added as an afterthought after movement begins.
