Residential Concrete Thickness Recommendations

Concrete thickness should match the loads, soil, base preparation, drainage, reinforcement, and intended use. Thickness alone cannot compensate for weak soil or a poorly compacted base.

Common residential starting points

  • Patios and ordinary walkways: often around 4 inches
  • Residential driveways: commonly around 4 to 5 inches depending on vehicles and design
  • Areas used by heavier trucks, trailers, or equipment: may need 5 to 6 inches or an engineered section
  • Basketball and athletic courts: often around 4 to 5 inches, depending on soil and surface system
  • Equipment pads, structural slabs, and foundations: designed for the actual equipment or building loads

What matters besides slab thickness

  • Stable subgrade with unsuitable material removed
  • Properly graded and compacted aggregate base
  • Correct concrete strength and freeze-thaw mix for outdoor Utah exposure
  • Reinforcement placed at the correct elevation
  • Control-joint spacing and panel shape
  • Positive drainage away from structures
  • Proper finishing and curing

When additional thickness may be appropriate

  • Heavy pickups, dump trailers, RVs, or construction equipment
  • Expansive, soft, disturbed, or poorly draining soils
  • Utility trenches or deep fills below the slab
  • Edges that are not supported by surrounding soil
  • Concentrated loads from posts, columns, lifts, or equipment
  • Locations where future access for repair would be difficult

A common mistake to avoid

Making the slab thicker while ignoring base preparation can still lead to settlement and cracking. The soil and aggregate beneath the slab must support the concrete uniformly.

The correct section should be selected after reviewing the soil, expected loads, drainage, access, and local requirements.
